On this page I will show you how to properly reset the Huawei E8231s-1 router back to it's original factory defaults. A reset like this one is not the same thing as a reboot. When you reboot a router you are only cycling the power to the unit. When you reset a router you take all the settings you have changed since owning the device and return them all to factory defaults.

Warning: This reset is a big step and should not be taken lightly. We strongly recommend trying other troubleshooting methods before you continue. Some of the settings that you need to consider before continuing are:

The router's main username and password.

If this is a DSL router you need to re-enter the Internet Service Provider (ISP) username and password. This information can be gathered by calling your ISP.

The wireless information such as SSID and Internet password.

If you have changed any other settings such as port forwards or IP addresses write them down as they are erased as well.

Reset the Huawei E8231s-1

The reset button/pinhole is located under the back panel of the Huawei E8231s-1 unit. If you open up the back cover you should see a button/pinhole labeled reset.

While the router is on, take a bent paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds or so. This begins the reset process which can take a minute or two.

If you don't hold the reset button down for long enough you might end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you wanted.

Remember this erases all settings you have changed in the past. We highly recommend trying other troubleshooting methods before continuing.

Login to the Huawei E8231s-1

Now that you've successfully reset your Huawei E8231s-1 router you'll want to log into it. This is done by using the factory default username and password. Don't know where you can find these? We have them listed for your use in our Login Guide.

Tip: If the defaults aren't logging you in it might be because the reset button wasn't held down for long enough.

Change Your Password

Once you've reset and logged into your router we suggest setting a new password for it. This can be anything you like, however keep in mind that a strong password is 14-20 characters in length and includes no personal information.
