How to Reset the Huawei HG8247

On this page I will show you how to reset the Huawei HG8247 router back to factory defaults. This is not the same thing as a reboot. When you reboot router you cycle the power to the unit. When you reset a router you take all the settings and return them to factory defaults.

Warning: This is a big step and should not be taken lightly. We highly recommend creating a list of all the possible settings you have changed in the past. Some of these settings are:

  • The router's primary username and password.
  • The WiFi SSID and password.
  • If this is a DSL router you need to re-enter the Internet Service Provider (ISP) username and password. Call your ISP for these details.
  • Have you forwarded any ports or changed any IP addresses? These are also erased and need to be reconfigured after the reset is complete.

Use a VPN Instead

In the image below I have circled the reset button for you in red. The reset button looks more like a pinhole than a reset. This is done to avoid accidental resets.

While the router is on take a straightened paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. This begins the reset process. If you don't hold the reset button down for at least 10 seconds you end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you wanted.

Remember a reset like this one is a big step and should not be taken lightly. We strongly recommend trying other troubleshooting methods before you continue.

Login to the Huawei HG8247

Following that you'll want to log into your Huawei HG8247 router. This can be done by using the factory default username and password. Not sure where you can find these? We have them provided for your use in our Login Guide.

Tip: If the defaults aren't working for you it could be because the reset button wasn't held down for long enough.

Change Your Password

Once you've logged into your router we recommend setting a new password for it. Keep in mind that this password will only protect your router settings, not your wireless network. All the same, setting a strong password is always a good choice. For help in doing so be sure to check out our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

Tip: Avoid losing your new password by writing it on a slip of paper and taping it to the underside of your router.
