Setup WiFi on the Linksys E1550

The Linksys E1550 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Login To The Linksys E1550

To get started configuring the Linksys E1550 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Linksys E1550

If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.

This guide starts on the Status page of the Linksys E1550 router. To configure the WiFi setting, click the option of Wireless. Then below that choose the new option of Basic Wireless Settings.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Linksys E1550

On this new page if the button labeled Wi-Fi Protected Setup is highlighted then you are on the WPS page. We recommend turning this off if possible. Read our guide titled What is WPS.

Tick the radio button labeled Manual.

Find the Network Name (SSID). This is the name you create to identify your network. It doesn't matter what you enter here, just avoid personal information. For more information read our guide titled How to Change your Wireless Name.

Next is the Channel drop down list. Make sure you are using channel 1,6, or 11. Learn why you need to be using these three channels by reading our guide titled WiFi Channels.

When you are finished, click the Save Settings button. Then at the top of the page click the link titled Wireless Security.

This takes you to the page you see here. Use the Security Mode drop down menu to choose the option of WPA Personal. This is the most secure option for your network. Learn more about this when you read our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.

Now use the Passphrase box to enter a new password for your internet. This password should be at least 14-20 characters for security reasons. We recommend using at least one number, symbol, and capital letter. For more tips, read our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password.

That's it, just click the Save Settings button before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
