On this page I describe how to reset the Linksys WET54G router. There is some confusion about the term reset. It does not refer to a reboot. When you reboot a router you cycle the power to the router. When you reset a router you take all the settings and return them to factory defaults.

Warning: A reset is a big step. Do not take this lightly. I strongly recommend making a list of all the possible settings you have changed in the past. I have started this list for you below.

  • The username and password used to access the router's interface pages.
  • The WiFi SSID and password for the network.
  • Is this a DSL router? If so you need to re-enter the Internet Service Provider (ISP) username and password. Call your local provider for these details.
  • What other settings have you changed in the past. How about port forwards or IP addresses?

Reset the Linksys WET54G

For the Linksys WET54G router you can find the reset button on the back panel. Take a look at the image below. I have circled the reset button for you in red.

While the router is plugged in and turned on use a sharp object such as pen or straightened paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. This starts the reset process. If you don't hold the reset button down for the full 10 seconds you might end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you planned.

Warning: DO NOT unplug or turn off the router during the reset process. Doing so could result in permanent damage to the device.

Please remember a reset like this one erases every single setting you have ever changed in the past. I highly recommend trying other methods of troubleshooting before you decide to reset.

Login to the Linksys WET54G

Once the Linksys WET54G router has been reset you will need to login to it. To do this you will be required to use the default IP address, password, and username. We have included this information in our Login Guide for the Linksys WET54G router.

Tip: Unable to login with the defaults? Try resetting the router again, but this time hold down the reset button for a little longer.

Change Your Password

After you login to your router you should change the password from the default. The default password for your router is easy to guess and can leave your router at risk. Visit our Choosing a Strong Password guide to get started on securing your router.

Tip: If you want to avoid losing your password try writing it down on some paper and attaching it to the bottom of your router.
