On this page I will be showing you how to properly reset the Linksys WGA54AG router back to factory defaults. This is not the same thing as a reboot. When you reboot a router you are simply cycling the power to the device. When you reset a router you take all the settings and return them to factory defaults. This means every single setting you have ever changed is erased.
Warning: This reset is a big step please don't take it lightly. I strongly recommend trying other methods first. If you are still having problems then make a list of all the settings you have changed in the past. These settings include:
- The router's main username and password.
- The Internet network name and password.
- Is this a DSL router? You may need to re-enter the Internet Service Provider (ISP) username and password. Call your local service provider for these details.
- Other settings you may of changed in the past are port forwards or IP address changes.

Use a VPN
Have you considered using a VPN when you connect to the internet? A VPN is a great way to increase your security and anonymity while surfing.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes securely sharing your home network super simple. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.
The first step is to locate the reset button. I have found it for you and circled it in the image below.
While the router is on take a straightened paperclip or ball point pen and press down on the reset button for about 5 seconds. This begins the reset process. Make sure to hold the reset button down for the full 5 seconds. If you don't you may end up simply rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you planned.
Warning: DO NOT unplug or turn off the router during the reset process. You could permanently damage your router if you do.
It is important that you remember this reset erases every single personal setting on this device. Please consider other options first.
Login to the Linksys WGA54AG
Now that your Linksys WGA54AG router has finished resetting you will have to login to it by using the default login information. This includes the default IP address, password, and username. We have compiled this information and you can find it in our Login Guide for the Linksys WGA54AG router.
Tip: Unable to login with the defaults? You might have accidentally rebooted the router instead of resetting it. Try resetting it again but this time hold down the reset button for a little longer.
Change Your Password
Now that you have logged into your router you should change the password as soon as possible. Leaving the default password in place can put your router at risk. Try to make your new password 14-20 characters long. Visit our Choosing a Strong Password guide for more password creation advice.
Tip: Want to avoid losing your password? Try writing it down on some paper and attaching it to the underside of the router.
