Have you been trying to login to the Linksys WMB54G router without success? It might be time to consider a reset. There is a lot of confusion out there between a reset and a reboot. When you reboot a router you cycle the power to the unit. When you reset the router you take all your personal settings and return them to factory defaults.

Warning: This means all your personal data is lost. If you need to retain this you must not reboot the Linksys WMB54G router. I recommend making a list of all the settings you may of changed in the past. These settings could be:

  • The router's main username and password.
  • The WiFi SSID and password used to protect the network.
  • Is this a DSL router? If so you need to re-enter the Internet Service Provider username and password. To find out what these are you should call your ISP.
  • What other settings have you changed in the past? How about port forwards or IP addresses?

The first step is to make sure the Linksys WMB54G router is on. Then taking a ball point pen or straightened paperclip and press down on the reset button for approximately 10 seconds. This begins the reset process. If you don't hold this button down for long enough you might end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it.

Caution: DO NOT unplug or turn off the router during the reset process. If you do you may end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you wanted.

Remember this reset is erasing every single setting you have ever changed in the past. I strongly recommend trying other methods of troubleshooting before you decide you want to reset the Linksys WMB54G router.

Login to the Linksys WMB54G

Once the Linksys WMB54G router has finished resetting you will need to login to it. To accomplish this you will need the default login information. Not sure what it is? You can check it out in our Login Guide for the Linksys WMB54G router.

Tip: Defaults not working? You might have accidentally rebooted the router instead of resetting it. Try resetting it again but this time hold down the reset button for a little bit longer.

Change Your Password

After you successfully login to your router you should change the password from the default. Default passwords are easy to guess and are not very secure. Try to make your new password 14-20 characters long and have it contain no personal information. Visit our Choosing a Strong Password guide if you need more help with creating a secure password.

Tip: Keep from losing your new password by writing it on a slip of paper for future reference and then attaching it to the bottom of the router.
