Setup WiFi on the Linksys WRT600N

The Linksys WRT600N router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Login To The Linksys WRT600N

To get started configuring the Linksys WRT600N WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Linksys WRT600N

If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.

This guide starts on the Basic Setup page of the Linksys WRT600N router. To configure the WiFi settings click the link at the top of the page labeled Wireless.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Linksys WRT600N

This directs you to the Basic Wireless Settings page of the Linksys WRT600N router. Scroll down and enter your changes in the sectioin titled 2.4GHz Wireless Settings.

First, use the Network Mode to choose Mixed.

Then, in the Network Name (SSID) box, enter the name you want to identify your network with. It doesn't really matter what you enter here but we suggest staying away from personal information. Learn more in our Wireless Names Guide.

Next is the Radio Band. We recommend choosing Auto.

Now skip down to the Standard Channel. For the least amount of interference we recommend that everyone should use channel 1,6, or 11. Learn why in our WiFi Channels Guide.

That's it, just click the Save Settings button near the bottom of the page, then click Wireless Security at the top of the page in blue.

This takes you to a page like the one you see here. We recommend using the section titled 2.4GHz Wireless Security.

In the Security Mode drop down list pick the option of WPA2 Personal. This is the best choice available today. Learn more about this in our WEP vs. WPA guide.

Under that is the Encryption. We recommend choosing AES.

Next is the Passphrase. This is the password you use to gain access to your network. It is important that you change the default password because hackers know the default passwords and try these first. When creating a new password we recommend using a minimum of 14-20 characters. We also recommend using symbols, numbers, and capital letters. We have more guidelines for a strong password in our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

That's it, just click the Save Settings button when you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
