An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

The first setting on this page that needs to be changed is called Channel. There is only room in the spectrum for up to three channels that don't overlap. These three channels are 1,6, and 11. Learn why everyone should be using these three channels in our WiFi Channels Guide.

Next, scroll down and find the option of SSID. In this space enter a name you want to use for your network ID. This name can be anything you like but we recommend avoiding personal information. Learn more about this in our Wireless Names Guide.

Under that is the Authentication Type. The best option here is WPA2-PSK. Learn why this is the best choice in our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.

Set the Encryption to AES.

Next is the Pre-Shared Key. This is the password you use to access your network with a wireless device. It is important that you create a strong password here. We recommend using at least 14-20 characters with a mix of numbers, symbols, and capital letters. Make this password as random as possible. Learn more tips in our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

That's it, just click the SAVE button before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
