The first setting that needs to be changed is the Name(SSID). Create a name that will be easy to recognize in the future, but avoid personal information. For more on this topic, read our Wireless Names Guide.

Below that is the Channel. Set this to channel 1,6, or 11. Learn why in our WiFi Channels Guide.

The third setting that needs to be changed is titled Security Options. For the best results we recommend setting this to WPA2-PSK(Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 Pre-Shared Key). For a detailed description of the differences in the options, read our WEP vs. WPA Guide.

Finally you need to change the Security Encryption (WPA2-PSK)Pre-Shared Key. This is the password you type into your wireless device to access your network. It is important to create a strong password of at least 14-20 characters. Learn an easy way to do this in our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

Click the Apply button if you wish to save your changes.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
