Setup WiFi on the Netgear WNDR4500

The Netgear WNDR4500 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Login To The Netgear WNDR4500

To get started configuring the Netgear WNDR4500 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Starting on the Basic Home page of the Netgear WNDR4500v2 router, click the option of the Wireless in the left sidebar.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Netgear WNDR4500

You should now be on the page you see here. We recommend making all the necessary changes in the section titled Wireless Network (2.4GHz b/g/n).

The first setting that needs to be changed is titled Name(SSID). This is the name you create in order to identify your network. While it really doesn't matter what you enter here we recommend avoiding personal information.

Now let's take a look at the Channel. The three channels you should choose from are 1,6, and 11.

Below that is the Security Options. For the best security available today, pick the option of WPA2-PSK[AES].

Finally change your Passphrase. This is the password you use to access your network and should be at least 14-20 characters and one symbol, number, and capital letter.

That's it, just click the green Apply button before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
