This guide shows you how to reset your ZyXEL P8701T router. This is not the same thing as rebooting a router. Turning a router off and back on again causes a reboot. This is very different from a reset, which erases a router completely and returns it to factory default settings.

Warning: Before you continue, there are a few things you need to know. The following settings in your router will be changed:

  • The router's login credentials are reset to factory defaults.
  • All WiFi login information and network names are reset.
  • Your ISP username and password will be reset, and you may have to contact your ISP.
  • Any firewall settings, parental controls, and port forwards that you have configured will be removed.

A router reset should be considered the last resort when you cannot log in to your router any other way. You should be sure that you have tried to at least recover your router password using our Router Password Finder before resorting to a router reset.

Do not do a full router reset until after you have tried every other option to log in to your router.

Reset the ZyXEL P8701T

Most routers have a small button on either the back or the bottom. Look at your router and try to find something that looks like this:

Router Reset Button

Even though yours may look slightly different, you need to look for a tiny button. You might find a pinhole on the back of the router that requires a paper clip to push the button hidden under it.

Keep an eye on the lights on the front of your router while holding the reset button down for about 10 seconds. The lights on the front of the router should do something different when the reset happens. It is harmless to hold the reset button too long.

Don't forget, this step will totally reset your ZyXEL P8701T router back to factory settings.

This last step should only be taken if you have tried everything else, such as using our Router Password Finder software, which can recover lost or forgotten router passwords.

Login to the ZyXEL P8701T

Now that you have finished resetting the router, you need to login to the router interface using the default username and password. We have a P8701T Login Guide with all this information ready for you.

Change Your Password

You need to change your router's default password after you log in for the first time. Since factory passwords are well known, it's a huge security risk to leave your router set to the default. Our Choosing a Strong Password guide can help you pick a strong password for your router.

Tip: Write your new password down on a post-it note and stick it to the bottom of your router.
