The 2wire 2700HG-D router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

Use a VPN Instead

Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.

We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.

When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:

  • Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
  • Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
  • Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
  • Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
  • Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.

This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.

Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.

NordVPN faster than ever deal!

Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.

Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.

You should now be on the Basic Settings page.

  1. Turn Wireless ON. Make sure that the button labeled On is selected.
  2. Change the SSID setting to any name or code you want. This is referring to your WiFi name. Enter the name or code you want associated with your network. When someone is accessing your network, this is the name you give them to find your network. Don't use your name or address here, this might be tempting to a potential hacker. To learn more about wireless names check out our guide on the subject, wireless name.
  3. Secure your wireless network by clicking on the button next to Auto WPA or WPA2. Make sure that Auto WPA or WPA2 is selected. This is the type of encryption the router will use when sending your personal data. WPA2 is the most secure.
  4. Select a Key. This is the password you and your family and friends will use to access your network. The password you choose here shouldn't contain any personal information. It needs to contain some capitals, and numbers, and we strongly recommend not using any known words found in any dictionary. For more information about how to create a strong password check out our guide on the subject, how to choose a strong password.
  5. Click Apply when you are finished on this page.

You have now finished setting up the basics, click the choice in the left sidebar titled, WPA or WPA2.

If you want to broadcast your Network Name, it is seen by all surrounding networks. It is also easier to access for you and anyone you want to access it.

If you choose to not broadcast your Network Name, it is invisible to the general public but not to your neighborhood hacker. A hacker has the tools to scan for all SSID's whether they are hidden or not. The bottom line is that your Network Name is just your Network identification, not a password. To keep a potential hacker away from you, create a strong password instead.

Don't forget to click the Apply button if you have made any changes.

To set change your WiFi channel click the option on the left labeled Channel.
