Let's begin this Arris WTM552 reset guide with the difference between resetting and rebooting. Rebooting a device is cycling the power by turning it off and back on again. Resetting a router will erase every single thing you have ever done to your router. It will usually leave a firmware update in place but everything else goes back to factory defaults.
Warning: As you can tell resetting the router can cause problems if you are unaware of the settings that are changed. We have created a partial list of the settings that are reset.
- Your router's username and password
- The WiFi SSID, password, and security
- The ISP username and password (if you use DSL). To learn more, call your ISP.
- All configurations such as port forwards, firewall settings, and even IP address changes.

Use a VPN Instead
Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.
The first step is keep the Arris WTM552 router on during this process. If the router is turned off or unplugged the router could get permanently damaged.
You now need to find the tiny reset button. This can be found on the back panel. Check out the image below.
Using the tip of a pencil or unwound paperclip press and hold the reset button for over 8 seconds.
Don't forget that this erases everything you have done to this router. Try other troubleshooting methods first.
Login to the Arris WTM552
Once the reset process is complete you need to login using the default username and password from the factory. These are normally found in the manual but we have found them for you and included them in the Arris WTM552 Login Guide.
Change Your Password
Now we recommend changing this password to something you created. Sometimes coming up with new passwords is hard. We have a guide to help you if you need it. Check out this Choosing a Strong Password guide for helpful hints and ideas.
Tip: Once you have created a new password for your Arris WTM552 you should write it down on a slip of paper and stick it to the bottom of the router for future reference.
Setup WiFi on the Arris WTM552
The last setting we recommend you change is the WiFi settings. Don't forget that this is reset as well. The router may have a disabled wifi security as the default. This is not a good idea. We strongly recommend changing the WiFi to WPA2-PSK. This has a great encryption built in and requires a password to login to your Internet. For instructions on this topic check out our How to Setup WiFi on the Arris WTM552.
Don't forget to sign up for NordVPN's promo deal before it's gone.
