In the Network Authentication drop down box, click the choice of WPA2-Personal. This is the best choice for security. For more information on the differences in the security protocols, check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.

Next, skip down to WPA Pre-Shared Key. This is the password you use to access your network. Be sure that this is a very strong password. It should contain at least 20 characters. Avoid using any personal information. Avoid using any words that can be found in a dictionary. We do advise that you use some symbols, numbers, and capital letters in the password. For more help in creating a strong password, check out our guide titled How to choose a strong password.

The only other thing on this page that you may need to change is the WPA Encryption. The two choices should be TKIP and AES. We recommend AES because it is newer and has not yet been cracked. TKIP is older and has some flaws.

Click the Save/Apply button when you are finished on this page.

There is one more page you may want to visit, click the link on the left side of the page labeled Advanced.

In the United States these are the only three channels that don't overlap with each other if everyone were to use them. For a more detailed explanation of why you should only use these three channels, check our our guide on WiFi channels.

That's it, just click the Save/Apply button and you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
