Setup WiFi on the Asus RT-N53

The Asus RT-N53 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Login To The Asus RT-N53

To get started configuring the Asus RT-N53 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Asus RT-N53

If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.

Once you have finished logging into the Asus RT-N53 router you need to click the option in the left sidebar labeled Wireless. This is located under the heading of Advanced Settings. Now look to the top of the page and click the tab labeled General if you are not already on that tab.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Asus RT-N53

You should now see a screen like the one you see above. The first setting that needs your attention is the SSID. This is the network name you use to identify your connection. It doesn't really matter what you enter here but we recommend avoiding personal information. To learn more check out our guide about wireless names.

If you want to change your Channel now is the perfect opportunity to do so. Open up the drop down list titled Control Channel and choose the channel you want to use. We recommend using channels 1,6, or 11. Find out why in our WiFi Channels guide.

Below that is the Authentication Method. Open up this drop down menu and choose the option of WPA2-Personal if it is not already chosen. Find out why this is your best option in our WEP vs. WPA guide.

Set the WPA Encryption to AES.

Finally the last setting you need to worry about is the WPA Pre-Shared Key. This is the password you use for the Internet. Make sure this password is strong. Follow our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password for a strong and memorable password.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
