Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

There are a few things on this page that need to be changed. The first is the SSID. The SSID is the name you give your network so you can identify it from others around you. Create an original name but try and avoid using personal information in it. Wireless names is a good guide on the topic if you are interested in learning more.

Just below that is the Channel. The channel can be changed if you are not happy with the reception you are getting. In the U.S. there are 11 channels you can use. Of those 11 channels, there is only room in the spectrum for three channels that do not overlap each other, channels 1,6, and 11. Overlapping channels cause a lot of interference, where sharing a channel does not. Use channel 1,6, or channel 11. For a good guide on the topic, check out WiFi channels.

The next thing that needs to be changed is the Authentication Method. This is the security your using to transmit your data. The best choice is WPA2-PSK. This router only allows for WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK which is the next best thing. WEP vs. WPA is a great guide if you want to know more about the differences in the security protocols. If you decide that you want WPA2-PSK you may need to update your firmware.

Under that is the WPA Encryption. This is wanting to know which type of encryption you prefer to use. There are two options, TKIP and AES. TKIP is older and has some pretty big flaws. AES is the option we recommend.

The last thing that has to be changed is the WPA Pre-Shared Key. This is the password you use to access your network. This password should be a strong one with at least 20 characters. You should not use any personal information in this password. Avoid using any dictionary words. If you need to use a word, misspell it. We do recommend using some symbols, capital letters, and numbers in the password. How to choose a strong password is a great guide on the subject.

Nothing else needs to be changed on this page, just don't forget to click the Apply button in the lower right corner of the page.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
