Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

You should now be on a page very similar to the one you see here. Things that need to be changed are as follows:

  • SSID - This should be changed to something of your choosing. This is the name you give your network so you can distinguish it from the ones around you. Avoid using any personal information in this name. Wireless names is a great guide on the subject if you need more help with this.
  • Channel - This needs to be changed if you are not currently on channel 1,6, or channel 11. In the United States there are 11 channels to choose from. Of these 11 channels there room in the spectrum for three channels that don't overlap, channels 1,6, and 11. Overlapping channels cause interference. For more information on why you should only be using these three channels, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.
  • Authentication Method - This is the security you want to use while you are transmitting data across the airwaves. There are several different options here, the best is WPA2-PSK. This version of Asus WL700gE doesn't seem to offer that option though. We recommend updating your firmware to allow for this type of security. If this is not an option for you then use WPA-PSK. Please read the guide on WEP vs. WPA for more information on the different security options.
  • WPA Encryption - Now that you have chosen how you are going to secure your router, you need to choose the type of encryption you want to use. The best choice is AES. AES is at the moment considered uncrackable.
  • WPA Pre-Shared Key - This is a fancy way of saying password. This password is extremely important to the security of your network. It is used in the encryption process also. Make this password strong by using at least 20 characters. Avoid using any personal information in this password. You should also avoid using any words that can be found in a dictionary. If you add symbols, capital letters, and numbers to your password it becomes even stronger. For more help in creating a strong and memorable password, check out our guide titled How to choose a strong password.
  • That's it, leave everything else alone on this page. Just don't forget to click the Apply button at the bottom of the page before exiting.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
