Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

You should now be on the Wireless Basic Settings page of your router.

  • The first thing you need to change is the SSID. This is the wireless name that you give your network. This name should be original but not contain any personal information in it. For more information on this topic check out our guide titled Wireless names.
  • The next thing that should be changed is the Channel Number. In United States there are 11 channels you can choose from. Of those 11 channels there is only room in the spectrum for three channels that do not overlap, channels 1,6, and 11. Overlapping channels cause a lot of interference. Sharing a channel causes much less interference so it is recommended that everyone use channel 1,6, or channel 11. For more information on this topic, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.
  • That's it for that page, simply click the Apply Changes button at the bottom of the page.

Then, click the Security link in the left sidebar.

This takes you to the page you see here.

  • The first thing on this page that needs to be changed is the Encryption. This is the type of security you are to use for your network. There are several different choices here, check out our guide, WEP vs. WPA, for more of an explanation of the different security protocols. We strongly recommend using WPA2(AES). This is by far the strongest and newest protocol available today.
  • Next is the WPA Authentication Mode. Home networks should use Personal (Pre-Shared Key).
  • Under that choose the Pre-Shared Key Format. You should choose Passphrase.
  • The last thing on this page is the Pre-Shared Key. Enter your password here. This password should be a strong one of at least 20 characters. Avoid using personal information in your password. You should also avoid using any word that can be found in a dictionary. Your password should contain at least one symbol, capital letter, and number. The more of these the stronger your password. For more help in creating a strong and memorable password, check out our guide titled How to choose a strong password.
  • Don't change any other setting on this page, simply click the Apply Changes button when you are finished.

That's it, you are done!

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
