An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Belkin F5D8632-4

router Wi-Fi channel ssid mode
This is the wifi channel page from your Belkin F5D8632-4 router.

The first thing that needs to be checked is the Wireless Channel. This will only need to be changed if you are not on channel 1,6, or 11. There is only room in the spectrum for up to three channels that don't overlap each other partially. Channels 1,6, or 11 are the channels everyone should be using. For more explanation on this topic, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

This next one has to be changed from the default. The SSID is the name you give your wireless network so you can identify it later on. This name should not contain any personal information. Check out our guide, Wireless names for more details.

Click the Apply Changes button and then, click the Security choice in the left sidebar.

router security
This is the security page from your Belkin F5D8632-4 router.

On this new page, use the Security Mode drop down list to choose WPA/WPA2-Personal(PSK). There are several choices here, so if you want to know the differences in these modes, check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.

Under that should be the Authentication. This is just further narrowing down your choice above. We recommend WPA2-PSK.

Next is the Encryption Technique. There are two choices here, TKIP and AES. TKIP is much older and has flaws making it easier to crack. We recommend AES. It is newer and considered very secure.

The last thing you have to change is the Password (PSK), or Pre-Shared Key. This password is the one you use to access your network. It is also used in the encryption technique. You need to create a strong password that can't easily be cracked by a program or by guessing. Create a password of at least 20 characters. Avoid using personal information as this can easily be guessed. Don't use any real words that can be found in a dictionary as these can be cracked by programs very quickly. This password should look random with some symbols, numbers, and capital letters. We have created a guide that can help you come up with a strong password that is memorable, Choosing a strong password.

When you are finished, click the Apply Changes button. That's it, you did it!

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
