This is the wifi channel page from your Belkin F5D8635au4A router.

You should now be on a page titled Wireless > Channel and SSID. Use the drop down list next to Wireless Channel to change your channel to either channel 1,6, or 11. There are up to 14 channels available to use, of these there is only room in the spectrum for up to three that don't partially overlap one another. Overlapping channels cause a lot of interference. If you are completely sharing a channel on the other hand, there is little interference due to channel sharing software built into routers. For more information on this topic, check out our guide titled WiFi channels. Be sure that you are on one of these three channels, 1,6, or 11.

The other setting on this page that needs to be changed is the SSID. This is the name you give your network so you can identify it from others around you. When creating a wireless name, be sure to avoid using anything that points to you such as personal information. For more on this subject, check out our guide titled Wireless names.

When you are finished on this page, click the Apply Changes button. Then on the left side of the screen, click Security.

Now, on the Wireless > Security page, use the drop down list next to Security Mode to choose the option of WPA-PSK (no server). There are several options here, but this one is the most secure. For more on this topic, check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.

Next is the Authentication. Use this drop down list to pick the option of WPA2-PSK. This is just further narrowing down the security mode you want.

The last thing you must change is the Pre-Shared Key (PSK). This password is the one you use to access your network. It is also used in the encryption technique. You need to create a strong password that can't easily be cracked by a program or by guessing. Create a password of at least 20 characters. Avoid using personal information as this can easily be guessed. Don't use any real words that can be found in a dictionary as these can be cracked by programs very quickly. This password should look random with some symbols, numbers, and capital letters. We have created a guide that can help you come up with a strong password that is memorable, Choosing a strong password.

Finally, click the link near the bottom of the page labeled Apply Changes before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
