An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

This is the wifi channel page from your Belkin F5D8636-4 router.

You should now be on a page like the one you see here. The first thing you need to change is the Wireless Channel. Actually it only needs to be changed if you are not on channel 1,6, or 11. In the United States you are allowed to use 11 channels for your wireless network. Of these channels there is only room in the spectrum for up to three channels that don't overlap each other at least partially. Overlapping channels causes a lot of interference. Completely sharing a channel does not due to channel sharing software within the router. So use channel 1,6, or 11. If you need more information on this subject, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

The other thing that needs to be changed on this page is the SSID. This is the name you give your network so you can identify it from the others around you. When creating a wireless name, be sure to use only non personal information. For more on this particular subject, check out our guide titled Wireless names.

Click the Apply Changes button, then click Security on the left side of the page.

This is the security page from your Belkin F5D8636-4 router.

You should now be on the Wireless > Security page. The first thing that needs to be changed on this page is the Security Mode. There are several options here, and you can look at our guide titled WEP vs. WPA for a look at the differences. The best choice is WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK).

Below that is the Authentication. This is further narrowing down the security mode. The best choice here is WPA2-PSK.

Next is the Encryption Technique. Use this drop down list to choose either TKIP or AES. We recommend using AES. This is the strongest choice available.

Finally, you need to change the Pre-shared Key (PSK). This is the password you use to access your network. It is also used in the encryption technique. You need to create a strong password that can't easily be cracked by a program or by guessing. Create a password of at least 20 characters. Don't use any personal information as this can easily be guessed. Don't use any real words that can be found in a dictionary as these can be cracked by programs very quickly. This password should look random with some symbols, numbers, and capital letters. We have created a guide that can help you come up with a strong password that is memorable, Choosing a strong password.

The last thing that needs to be done is click the Apply Changes button. That's it, you are done!

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
