Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

This is the wifi channel page from your Belkin F7D4402 router.

On this page you should notice two columns of settings. One for 2.4GHz and one for 5GHz. If you are unsure of which one to fill in, choose 2.4GHz. Older devices will not run on 5GHz.

First, use the Wireless Channel drop down list to choose the channel you want to be on. You should be on either channel 1,6, or 11. These three channels are the most you can get out of the spectrum without overlapping. Overlapping channels cause a lot of interference. Be sure to use channel 1,6, or 11. For more on this subject, read our guide at WiFi channels.

The other thing that needs to be changed is the SSID. This is the name you give your local network so you can identify it. When you create a name be sure to avoid using any personal information. For more on this, check out our guide titled Wireless names.

That's it for this page, click the Apply Changes button. Then in the left sidebar click the link labeled Security.

First is the Security Mode. Choose the option of WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK). This is the strongest security available. Check out our guide for more details, WEP vs. WPA.

After that, is the Authentication. This is just narrowing down your choice even more. For the strongest security, choose WPA2-PSK.

The last thing on this page that needs to be changed is the Pre-Shared Key (PSK). This is the password you use to access your network but it is also used to encrypt your data. Create a strong password of at least 20 characters. Don't use any personal information and don't use any real words. Do use symbols, capital letters, and numbers in your password. For help in creating a strong password that is memorable, check out our guide titled Choosing a strong password.

You are finished, all that is left to do is click the Apply Changes button.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
