This directs you to a new page that looks like the one you see above. Select the bandwidth you want to use first. Either 2.4GHz or 5GHz. I recommend 2.4GHz unless you live extremely close to your neighbors such as an apartment building. Which ever bandwidth you choose make all your future changes to your WiFi under that particular column.

The first setting you can change is the Wireless Channel. If you need to change your channel you can do it by opening the Wireless Channel drop down list and pick the channel you want to use. If you use 2.4GHz make sure to use channels 1,6 or 11. There are more options if you are using 5GHz but the range is radically reduced. Learn more in our guide titled WiFi Channels.

Next is the SSID. Go ahead and enter a new name in this box. The SSID is the name you give your network so you can identify it when trying to connect. Make your SSID a unique name but avoid personal and router specific information. Learn more in our guide titled How to Change your Wireless Name.

That is all that needs to be changed on this page. Click the green Save button.

Back near the top of the page you should see some tabs running horizontal on the page. Click the one labeled Security.

Remember which bandwidth you chose on the last page? On this new page only fill out the security information in the chosen bandwidth, 2.4GHz or 5GHz.

The first setting to possibly change is the Security Mode. Make sure this is set to WPA/WPA2-Persnoal(PSK).

Below that is the Authentication. I recommend setting this to WPA2-PSK. This is the strongest security available right now. Learn more in our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.

Finally, change the Pre-shared Key (PSK). This is the Internet password. It is the key to your network and needs to be strong. Make sure to use at least 14 characters in this new password. Use a mixture of letters, numbers, and symbols. Learn more in our Choosing a Strong Password guide.

That's it, your network should be very secure now. Simply click the green Save button before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
