  • Tick the box next to Enable Wireless.
  • Drop down to the SSID box. This is the name you give your network so you can find it again later. Enter a name here that you like, but avoid using personal information. For more on this topic, read the guide titled Wireless names.
  • If you want to hide this network name you have just created, uncheck the box next to Broadcast. Understand that while this may hide your name from scanning wireless devices, a hacker can still find hidden networks fairly easily.
  • Next is the Channel. Be sure you are on either channel 1,6, or 11. To learn why you should only use these three channels, check out our guide titled WiFi Channels.
  • After that, you need to do is change the Security. The best choice is WPA2-PSK. If this is not available, you need to update your firmware to allow for this. To learn the differences in the modes, click the link titled WEP vs. WPA.
  • The last thing you need to change is the Pre-Shared Key. This is the password you use to access your network. This password should be strong, at least 20 characters. Don't use any personal information, this is easily guessed. Don't use any words that can be found in a dictionary. These words are easily cracked with dictionary programs. For more on this topic, read our guide titled Choosing a strong password.

That's all there is to it, simply click the Apply button and you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
