Setup WiFi on the Cisco EPC3825

The Cisco EPC3825 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

Login To The Cisco EPC3825

To get started configuring the Cisco EPC3825 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Cisco EPC3825

If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.

Beginning on the Gateway Status of the Cisco EPC3825 router. To configure the WiFi settings click the link at the top of the page labeled Wireless. Then below that, choose Basic Settings.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Cisco EPC3825

  • The Wireless Network should be Enabled.
  • The Wireless Configuration needs to be set to Manual. Do not using Wi-Fi Protected Setup. Please read our guide on the topic for more information, What is WPS.
  • Next, the Network Mode can be left at it's default setting of B/G/N Mixed.
  • The Radio Band can be left at the default of Enabled 2.4GHz.
  • The Channel Width can be left at it's default as well.
  • The last thing on this page is the Standard Channel. Make sure to use channel 1,6, or 11. These three channels are the most you can get out of the spectrum without overlap. Overlap causes a lot of interference. For more on this subject, click the link titled WiFi Channels.

Finish by clicking the button near the bottom of the page labeled Save Settings.

Now, click the tab of Wireless Security near the top of the page.

  • The Wireless Security Mode needs to be set to WPA2-Personal. This is the most secure option. To learn more about this topic, click the link titled WEP vs. WPA.
  • Set the Encryption to AES. This is the strongest encryption available.
  • The Pre-Shared Key is next. This is the password you use to access the network. This password should be strong. We recommend at least 20 characters. Don't use any real words in this password, these are easily cracked. For help in creating a strong yet memorable password, click the link titled Choosing a strong password.
  • Leave the Key Renewal at the default of 3600. This is how often the router creates a new encryption key from your password.

Click the Save Settings button and you are finished, congratulations.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
