The settings that may need to changed are:

  1. The Wireless Network Name - This is the name you give your network so that you can identify it later on. When creating a name here, avoid using personal information if possible. To learn more, read our Wireless names guide.
  2. The Visibility Status can be changed if you want to. If you decide to tick Invisible, your network name will not show up in the list of available networks. Understand that while this may hide your name from scanning wireless devices, a hacker can still find hidden networks fairly easily. Your network name is only camouflaged, not really invisible.
  3. You need to make sure that Random Channel Select is not checked.
  4. In the drop down list titled Wireless Channel choose from channel 1,6, or 11. Everyone with neighbors should be using one of these three channels to avoid overlap. These three channels are the most you can get out of the spectrum without overlap. Overlapping channels causes a lot of interference. To learn more, read our guide titled WiFi Channels.
  5. In the next section titled Wireless (Wi-Fi) Security Mode choose the radio dot labeled WPA-Personal. To learn why this is the best choice, read our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.
  6. Now scroll down to the WPA section. In the WPA Mode choose WPA2 Only.
  7. The Cipher Type should be set to AES. This is the most secure option available.
  8. Set the Group Key Update Interval to 1800 or leave it at it's default setting. This is how often, in seconds, that the router creates a new encryption key from your password.
  9. Next is the Pre-Shared Key. This is the password you use to access your network. This is also used in the encryption technique so this password needs to be strong. A strong password is at least 20 characters long, and contains at least one symbol, number, and capital letter. A good password does not contain personal information or actual words. The more random a password looks, the stronger it is. You can create a random looking password that is memorable, read our guide titled Choosing a strong password for more information.
  10. Now scroll back to the top of the page and click the blue Save Settings button.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
