This brings you to the Basic Wireless Settings page. Clicking the Wi-Fi Protected Setup radio button at the top of the page takes you to the page that deals with WPS. We advise turning this function off. WPS is a relatively easy way for a possible intruder to access your network. Read more about the insecurities of WPS in our guide titled What is WPS.

Tick the radio button at the top of the page labeled Manual.

This opens a page where you can manually change the WiFi settings. In the 2.4GHz Wireless Settings section, find the box labeled Network Name (SSID). This is a name you create in order to identify your network. It doesn't matter what you enter here but we advise you to not use personal information. Read our How to Change your Wireless Name Guide for more information on the topic.

Now find the drop down list titled Channel. You need to use a channel that does not overlap. For this reason you should use only channel 1,6, or 11. Learn why this is important by reading our WiFi Channels Guide.

Once you have made these changes, click the Save Settings button near the bottom of the page.

Then at the top of the page click Wireless Security.

You should now be on a page like the one you see here. Find the heading in the left sidebar of 2.4GHz Wireless Security. Use this section to enter in the information.

First, use the drop down menu of Security Mode to choose WPS2 Personal. This is the strongest security option for home networks. To learn more, read our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.

Now enter in the Passphrase. This is the password you use to grant access to your network. It's a good idea to create a strong password of at least 14-20 characters. Use a mix of numbers, capital letters, and symbols. Learn more tips, when you read our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password.

Finally, click Save Settings before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
