On this page I will describe how to reset the Linksys RVS4000 router back to factory defaults.

A reset is not the same thing as a reboot. When you reboot a router all you are doing is cycling the power to then unit. When you reset a router you are taking all the settings and returning them all to how they were when they left the factory.

Warning: Resetting the router is a big step and should not be taken lightly. I recommend making a list of all the settings you may of change din the past. These settings include:

  • The router's main username and password.
  • Any port forwarding you have done.
  • IP addresses that have been changed.
  • Parental controls, DNS, etc...

Reset the Linksys RVS4000

Take a look at the image below. The reset button is on the left side of the back panel. I have circled it for you in the image below.

First of all, make sure the router is on. Then take a straightened paperclip or other similar device and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. This begins the reset process. If you don't hold the reset button down long enough you might end up only rebooting it instead of resetting it like you planned.

Warning: DO NOT unplug or turn off the Linksys RVS4000 router during the reset process. You could cause permanent damage to the device.

ALL your settings will be erased! I strongly recommend trying other troubleshooting methods before you continue.

Login to the Linksys RVS4000

Following the reset, you will have to login to the router. To do this you will need the default IP address, username, and password. If you are unsure of what these are, we have compiled them in our Login Guide for the Linksys RVS4000 router.

Tip: Defaults not working? The reset button might have not been held down for long enough. Try resetting the router again but hold the button for a little longer this time.

Change Your Password

Once you successfully login to the router it is important to change the password as soon as possible. A good password usually contains about 14-20 characters and is unique. For additional advice on creating a secure password, visit our Choosing a Strong Password guide.

Tip: Prevent losing your password by writing it down on some paper and attaching it to the base of the router.
