Setup WiFi on the Linksys WRT54G3G

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Login To The Linksys WRT54G3G

Find the WiFi Settings on the Linksys WRT54G3G

Once you have logged into the Linksys WRT54G3GV2-VF, you start on the Basic Setup page. From there, tick the link at the top labeled Wireless.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Linksys WRT54G3G

On this new page,like the one seen above, the first setting that needs to be changed is the Network Name (SSID). This is your identification name. It doesn't matter what you enter here but we recommend avoiding personal information. Learn more in our Wireless Name Guide.

The second thing on this page is the Standard Channel. Use this drop down list to choose either 1,6, or 11. Learn more about this in our WiFi Channels Guide.

That's it, just click the Save Settings button, then click Wireless Security at the top of the page.

This brings you to the page you see above. First, use the Security Mode drop down list to choose the option of WPA2 Personal for the best security. Learn more in our WEP vs. WPA guide.

Below that is the WPA algorithm. Use this drop down list to choose AES.

The last thing you need to do is change the WPA Shared Key. This is the password you use for your network. It's quite important that you change this password from the default. Hackers know the default passwords and try these first when attempting to crack your system. Create a strong password of at least 14-20 characters. Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. That's all you need to do, just click the Save Settings button before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
