In this guide we will cover how to reset the Arris WTM652 router to factory defaults. This is not the same thing as rebooting the device. Rebooting only means cycling the power by turning it off and back on again. Resetting a router is more involved as it erases all previous configurations and reverts completely to factory defaults.
Warning: Resetting your router is a serious step in fixing a problem. Please be sure to consider the following before you continue.
- Your router's main username and password are reverted to factory defaults.
- The WiFi info such as SSID, password, and security are reset.
- If you connect to the Internet using a DSL connection you need to re-enter the ISP or Internet Service Provider username and password. For more information call your ISP.
- Everything you have ever done to your router is erased. This could include DNS addresses, port forwards, or even firewall settings. Everything goes back to factory defaults.

Use a VPN
Have you considered using a VPN when you connect to the internet? A VPN is a great way to increase your security and anonymity while surfing.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes securely sharing your home network super simple. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.
The very first step to resetting your Arris WTM652 router is to be sure it is on. Do not unplug or turn off the router at any point during the reset. This could cause irreparable damage to your router.
The second step is to locate the tiny reset button. This particular router has two. One of them is somewhat misleading as it is really just a reboot button. You want the upper one. We have circled it in red for you in the image below.
Taking the tip of a pencil or pen press and hold this tiny reset button for approximately 10 seconds.
Don't forget that this WILL erase everything you have done to personalize this device. It will all need to be entered again.
Login to the Arris WTM652
Now that you have finished resetting the Arris WTM652 router you must login using the factory default username and password. We have found these for you. They can be found in our Arris WTM652 Login Guide.
Change Your Password
Once logged in you should change that default password. Finding default passwords can be easy once you know where to look. If creating a strong password isn't easy you can take a look at our helpful Choosing a Strong Password guide for ideas and tips.
Tip: It's a good idea to write this new password down on a piece of paper and stick it to the bottom of your router for future reference.
Setup WiFi on the Arris WTM652
The only other setting we consider urgent to fix is the WiFi security. This includes the SSID, encryption, and password you use to protect your network. Some router manufacturers like to leave the WiFi security disabled as the default. Change this immediately to WPA2-PSK if possible. WPA2-PSK is the strongest form of security available today for routers. If you need instructions on how to navigate to the appropriate pages or instructions on what all this means, check out our How to Setup WiFi on the Arris WTM652 router guide.
Don't forget to sign up for NordVPN's promo deal before it's gone.
