Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

You should now be on the page you see here. The first thing you need to change is the SSID. This is referring to the network name. This name identifies your network from others around you. This name should be changed, but avoid using any personal information. For a great guide on the subject click the link titled Wireless names.

Next is the Hide SSID. By default No is chosen. If you leave it this way, your internet is visible to surrounding networks. If you decide to click the Yes button then you are invisible to your neighbors, but not to a hacker with the proper scanning tools.

Look farther down this page and find the Control Channel. You are able to change the channel on your WiFi if you need to. In the United States there are 11 channels you can choose from. Of these 11 channels, there is only room in the spectrum for three channels that do not overlap each other, channels 1,6, and 11. We recommend that you use one of these three channels. For more information on why you should only use one of these three channels, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

Directly below that is the Authentication Method. There are several different authentication methods, the newest and best authentication is WPA2-Personal for home networks. For more information on this particular subject click the link titled WEP vs. WPA.

Next is the WPA Encryption. This is asking you how you want to encrypt your private information while transmitting it over the airwaves. There are two choices, TKIP and AES. TKIP is older and flaws have been found in it. AES is older and so far has not been cracked. We recommend using AES.

The last thing you need to change is the WPA Pre-Shared Key. This is the password that you are going to use to access your network. This is an important step because this password also is used to create keys for your encryption. Create a strong password of at least 20 characters. We suggest avoiding personal information, and dictionary words. Do use symbols, numbers, and capital letters within your password. For help in creating a strong yet memorable password, please check out our guide titled How to choose a strong password.

When you are finished, be sure to click the Apply button before exiting.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
