An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

There are a few things on this page that need to be changed.

  • The first thing is the SSID. This is the network name that identifies your network from those around you. We suggest creating an original name but avoid using any personal information here. For a more detailed guide on this subject, click our link titled Wireless names.
  • Next is the Hide SSID. By default, No is ticked. If this is chosen then your network is visible to other networks. If you decide to choose Yes, then the network is invisible to neighbors, but not to a hacker with the proper scanning tools.
  • Scroll down until you see the Channel. In the United States there are 11 channels you can choose from. Of those 11 channels there is only room in the spectrum for three channels that do not overlap each other, channels 1,6, and 11. Use one of these three channels. For more information on why you should only be using these channels, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.
  • Now find the Authentication Method. This is the security you are going to use while transmitting your data on the airwaves. There are several different security methods to choose from. We suggest using WPA2-Personal for home networks. For more information on the different security options, check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.
  • Under that is the WPA Encryption. Now that you have chosen what type of security you want to use, the router wants to know how you want to encrypt the data. The choices are TKIP and AES. TKIP is older and has some flaws. We recommend using AES.
  • Lastly on this page, you need to change the WPA Pre-Shared Key. This is the password you use to access your network. This password needs to be strong because it is also used to encrypt your data. Create a password of at least 20 characters. Avoid using personal information. Avoid using any dictionary words. We do suggest using symbols, capital letters, and numbers in the password. For help in creating a strong and memorable password, check out our guide titled How to choose a strong password.
  • Click the Apply button when you are finished.

That's it, you did it!

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
