The page you are now on should look like the one you see above. The things that need to be changed are:

  1. The SSID - This is the name of your network or your wireless name. You need to create an original name but avoid using any personal information here. Check out our guide for more information on this topic. Wireless names
  2. Next is the Channel - The United States allow for 11 channels to be used. Of these 11 channels there is only room in the spectrum for three channels that do not overlap each other, channels 1,6, and 11. Overlapping channels cause a lot of interference. Use channel 1,6, or channel 11. Check out our guide for more information on this subject. WiFi channels
  3. Now, skip down to the Authentication Method - This is the security of your system. There are several different choices and they are not all equal. The best by far is WPA2-PSK. Check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.
  4. Now use the drop down menu next to WPA Encryption to choose AES. AES is the newest and most secure choice for encryption here.
  5. The last thing that needs to be changed on this page is the WPA Pre-Shared Key. This is the password you use to access your network. A strong password that contains at least 20 characters is recommended. Make sure to use some symbols, numbers, and capital letters within the password. Avoid using any personal information. You should also avoid using any word that can be found in a dictionary. Check out our guide for more help in creating a strong password that is memorable, How to choose a strong password.
  6. Finally, click the Apply button when you are finished.

Congratulations, you have changed your WiFi settings.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
