This is the wifi channel page from your Belkin F5D7632-4 router.

On this page, first change the SSID. This is the name you give your network so you can distinguish it from the others around you. This name should not contain any personal information. Please read our guide for a more detailed description, Wireless names.

Next is the ESSID Broadcast. You either enable this or disable this. If you leave this at ENABLE, your network name can be seen by any wireless device that is scanning in the area. If you DISABLE this, you are hidden from neighboring wireless devices, but not from a hacker that has the scanning tools. This is only a camouflage, not invisibility.

The last thing on this page is the Wireless Channel. This should only be changed if you are not on channel 1,6, or 11. In the United States there are 11 channels to choose from. Of these 11 channels there is only room in the spectrum for up to three channels that don't overlap one another, channels 1,6, and 11. For more information on why you should only be using these three channels, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

Finally, click the blue Apply Changes button. Then in the left sidebar click the link titled Security.

Once on this new page, you need to check your Allowed Client Type. Make sure you are using WPA2 Only. This is the most up-to-date option available. For more information on this topic, check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.

Next is the Authentication. Here you need to click the radio button labeled Pre-shared Key.

Under that is the Encryption Technique. There are basically two choices here, TKIP and AES. The strongest and most up-to-date encryption is AES.

The last thing on this page is the Pre-shared Key. This is the password you will use to access your network. This should be a strong password of at least 20 characters. You should avoid using any personal information. Avoid using any words found in a dictionary. You should use symbols, capital letters, and numbers within the password. For more help in creating a strong password, click the link titled Choosing a strong password.

That's all there is to it, simply don't forget to click the blue Apply Changes button before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
