The Belkin F5D8635-4 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

Use a VPN Instead

Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.

We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.

When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:

  • Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
  • Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
  • Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
  • Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
  • Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.

This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.

Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.

NordVPN is the fastest VPN!

Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.

Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Belkin F5D8635-4

router Wi-Fi channel ssid mode
This is the wifi channel page from your Belkin F5D8635-4 router.

You should now be on a page like the one you see above. There are two things that need to be changed on this page. The first is the Wireless Channel. This only needs to be changed if you are not on channel 1,6, or 11. There is only room in the spectrum for up to three channels that don't at least partially overlap. Overlapping channels don't mix well, they cause a lot of interference. Completely sharing a channel on the other hand is much better because of channel sharing software within the router itself. Check out our guide for more info on this topic, WiFi channels.

The other thing on this page that needs to be changed is the SSID. This is the name you give your network so you can identify from the others around you. This name should be unique but don't use personal information in it. If you need to know more about this, check out our guide titled Wireless names.

That's it, just click the Apply Changes button, then click the link in the left sidebar labeled Security.

router security
This is the security page from your Belkin F5D8635-4 router.

On this page, the first thing you need to change is the Security Mode. There are several different options here, and the differences are explained in the guide, WEP vs. WPA. We recommend using the security mode of WPA-PSK (no server).

The next choice should be the Authentication. This is further narrowing down what type of security mode you want to use. We recommend the strongest, WPA2-PSK.

If you are given the option of selecting the Encryption Technique, choose AES. There are two options available, TKIP and AES. TKIP is older and has some flaws that make it much easier to crack. AES is much newer and considered extremely secure right now.

The last thing on this page that you must change is the Pre-Shared Key. It may be worded as the Passphrase (PSK). This is the password you use to access you network. This is also used within the encryption technique, so it should be very strong. We do not recommend using any personal information here as it could be guessed. Do not use any dictionary words because there are programs that can crack these passwords quickly. This password should be at least 20 characters long. Use some symbols, numbers, and capital letters in the password. For help in creating a password that is strong and memorable, check out our guide titled Choosing a strong password.

That's it, just click the button at the bottom of the page labeled Apply Changes before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
