This is the wifi channel page from your Belkin F5D8636uk4A router.

You are now on the Wireless > Channel and SSID page. First take a look at your channel in the Wireless Channel drop down list. If you are on channel 1,6, or 11 you are fine. If you find you are on any other channel you need to change it to either channel 1,6, or 11. In the United States there are 11 channels you can choose from, of these channels there is only room in the spectrum for up to three that don't overlap. You need to be using one of these three. For more on this topic, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

The other setting that should be changed is the SSID. This is the name you give your network so you can identify it later on. This name should be changed to one of your choosing. Don't use any personal information here. For more on this topic, check out our guide at Wireless names.

Click the link titled Apply Changes, then Security on the left side of the page.

router security
This is the security page from your Belkin F5D8636uk4A router.

This takes you to a page like the one you see here. The first thing that needs to be changed is the Security Mode. There are several different options here, if you want more information about this, tick the link titled WEP vs. WPA. Our recommendation is WPA/WPA2-Personal(PSK).

Below that is the Authentication. Choose WPA2-PSK, this is the strongest authentication available.

Under that is the Encryption Technique. There are two choices here, TKIP and AES. TKIP is older and less secure than AES. We recommend choosing AES.

The last thing you need to change is the Pre-shared Key (PSK). This is the password you use to access your network. This password needs to be strong, at least 20 characters. Avoid using any personal information or real words that can be found in a dictionary. We do suggest using some symbols, capital letters, and numbers. For help in creating a strong password that is memorable, click the link titled Choosing a strong password.

Click the Apply Changes button before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
