On this new page, use the Wireless Channel drop down list to choose the channel you want to be on. There is only room in the spectrum for up to three channels that don't overlap each other. These channels are 1,6, and 11. Be sure to use one of these three channels. For more on this topic, read our guide titled WiFi channels.

A little further down this page is the SSID. This is the name you give your home network so you can identify it later on. Don't include any personal information. For more on this topic, click the link titled Wireless names.

Click the Apply Changes button. Then, tick the link titled Security.

This is the wifi security page from your Belkin F7D3402 router.

On this page, use the drop down list titled Security Mode to choose the option of WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK). If you want to know the differences in the security modes offered here, check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.

Next is the Authentication. This is just narrowing down your choice in the Security Mode. We recommend WPA2-PSK.

It doesn't look like you have a choice with the Encryption Technique. If you do have a choice, pick AES. AES is considered a very secure encryption method.

The last thing on this page that should be changed is the Pre-Shared Key (PSK). This is the password you use when you access the internet. This is also used in the encryption to code your information. Create a strong password of at least 20 characters. Avoid using personal information that could be guessed. Don't use any words that can be found in a dictionary, these are cracked very quickly using dictionary programs. We do suggest using some capital letters, numbers, and symbols within the password. For help creating a strong and easily remembered password, check out our guide labeled Choosing a strong password.

That's it, you did it, just don't forget to click the Apply Changes before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
