WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

There are two things on this page that need to be looked at. First, the Wireless Channel needs to be on channel 1,6, or 11. These three channels are the most you can get out of the spectrum without overlapping. Overlapping channels cause a lot of interference. If you completely share a channel, it does not due to channel sharing software in the router. For more on this subject, read our guide titled WiFi channels.

Below that is the SSID. This is the name you give your network so you can identify it later on. We recommend that you don't use any personal information. For more on this subject, read our guide titled Wireless names.

Now, click the button labeled Apply Changes.

In the left sidebar, tick the link titled Security.

You are now on a page like the one you see above. First, use the Security Mode drop down menu to choose the type of security you want. Refer to our guide, WEP vs. WPA, for a description of the different security modes. Our recommendation is to use WPA-PSK(no server).

Next, is the Authentication. This is just narrowing down your security mode choice a little more. The best choice here is WPA2-PSK.

Below that is the Encryption Technique. There are two choices here, TKIP and AES. TKIP is older and has some flaws that make it vulnerable. The newest and most secure encryption is AES.

The last thing you need to do is choose a strong password. Place your cursor in the box labeled Pre-shared Key (PSK) and enter the password you want to use to access your network. This should be a strong password of at least 20 characters. Don't use any personal information in this password. It is also a good idea to avoid using real words. Any word that can be found in a dictionary is easily cracked. Do use symbols, numbers, and capital letters. For help in creating a strong and memorable password, check out our guide titled Choosing a strong password.

That's it, just click the Apply Changes button before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
