WiFi Terms
Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.
Wireless Name
Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.
Wireless Password
An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.
Wireless Channel
Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.
Encryption
You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.
Login To The Hot Hotbox
To get started configuring the Hot Hotbox WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.
To login to the Hot Hotbox, follow our Hot Hotbox Login Guide.
Find the WiFi Settings on the Hot Hotbox
If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.
The WiFi guide begins on the Status page of the Hot Hotbox router. First, click the option near the top of the page labeled Wireless. This opens a new set of choices on the left side of the page. Tick the link titled WiFi Setup.
Change the WiFi Settings on the Hot Hotbox
This brings you to a page called Wireless Network Configuration.
- In the box titled Network Name (SSID) enter a new name for your network. This is the identification of your local network and can be anything you like. We do suggest avoiding personal information for security reasons. Read more about the SSID on the page titled Wireless Names.
- The next thing that can be changed is the Control Channel. You can change your channel if you are not getting the reception you think you should. Be sure to use only channels 1,6, or 11. Learn why by reading our WiFi Channels Guide.
- If you want to hide your SSID from nearby wireless devices, use the Broadcast SSID drop down menu to choose the option ofDisabled. Remember that while this hides your network name from your neighbors, it is still out there and can be found by a determined hacker.
- Next is the WiFi Security. Use the drop down menu to choose the option of WPA/WPA2. Please read our guide titled WEP vs. WPA. This describes the differences is the available security options. We recommend updating your firmware to allow for the more secure option of WPA2 Only. Learn how to do this in our firmware guide.
- Below that is the Key. This is the password that you need to type into the wireless devices that you allow onto your network. We recommend creating a strong password of at least 14-20 characters and at least one symbol, number, and capital letter. Read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide for more info.
- Click the option titled Apply and you are finished.
WPS is on the right side of the screen. We strongly caution against using WPS. It is a weak link in the network security. It creates an easy access for a hacker. Use the drop down list under the heading of Automatic Security Configuration to choose Disabled. Read our What is WPS Guide for more information on this.
Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings
After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
