Setup WiFi on the Sitecom WL-312

The Sitecom WL-312 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Login To The Sitecom WL-312

To get started configuring the Sitecom WL-312 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Sitecom WL-312

If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.

This wireless guide begins on the System Status page of the Sitecom WL-312 router. Click the option at the top of the page labeled Wireless Settings. Then below that, select the tab titled Basic.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Sitecom WL-312

On this page there are two settings that should be changed. The first is titled ESSID. This is the name you create in order to identify your network. It doesn't really matter what you enter here but we recommend avoiding personal information. Learn more about this in our Wireless Name Guide.

Next is the Channel. Just make sure you are using channels 1,6, or 11. Learn why in our WiFi Channels Guide.

That's it for this page, just click the Apply button before continuing.

Now select the tab titled Security.

You should now be on the Wireless Security page of the router. Use the Encryption drop down list to choose WPA Pre-shared key.

Some new settings should appear. Use the WPA Type to choose WPA2(AES). Find out why in this guide.

Set the Pre-shared Key Type to Passphrase.

Finally you need to change the Pre-shared Key. This is the password you use to access your network. It needs to be strong to deter attacks. We recommend at least 14 to 20 characters. Don't forget to add some symbols, numbers, and capital letters to this password. Learn more in our Password Guide.

That's all there is to it, simply click the Apply button before exiting.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
