How to Reset the Asus GT-AC5300

In this guide I will be showing you how to reset the Asus GT-AC5300 router. This is not the same thing as a reboot. A reboot is a cycle in the power to the unit. A reset erases everything you have personalized in the router.

Warning: Resetting a router is a big step. You need to fully reconfigure the device afterwards. Some of the settings that need to be changed after a reset are:

  • The router's login username and password.
  • The router's Wi-Fi SSID/network name and password.
  • If this is a DSL router, you need to re-enter the ISP (Internet Service Provider) username and password. Call your ISP for these details.
  • Any port forwarding, scheduling, or IP addresses you have changed.

I strongly recommend exhausting your other troubleshooting methods before you continue with this reset.

To find the reset button on the router, turn it around so you are looking at the back of it. The side with all the cords coming out. It will be a tiny button (normally recessed to avoid accidental resets).

With the router on take a straightened paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. This starts the reset process which can take more than several minutes to complete.

Warning: Do not unplug or turn off the router during the reset process. Doing so can cause permanent damage to the device.

When you have finished with the reset you need to login to reconfigure the router. To do this you will be using the default values.

Now you should change the login password and write it down somewhere safe. Writing it down on a sticky note and attaching it to the router should be fine for the login password.
