You should now be on the page you see above. First in the box titled Primary, type in an original name for your wireless network. You see this name when you use a wireless device to scan for available networks. Since this name can be seen by any wireless devices in the area we suggest avoiding any personal information here. For more information on this particular topic, check out our guide titled Wireless names.

Skip down to the Wireless Mode. Use this drop down box to choose 802.11g+802.11b(Mixed). This is referring to the devices you are running on your network. The slowest and oldest is 802.11a and 802.11b, these were made in approximately 1999-2003. If you have devices made between 2003-2009, it is most likely 802.11g. From 2009-2012 they make 802.11n devices. If they are newer than that they may be 802.11ac. Since the age of most of your devices are going to be varied we recommend using 802.11g+802.11b(Mixed). If you need 802.11n or ac, try upgrading your firmware to allow for this. Check out our Update Firmware guide if you are interested in doing that.

The last thing on this page is the Channel. You may need to change this if you notice your internet running slower than normal. You should also change this if you are not on channel 1,6, or 11. In the United States there are 11 channels you can use for your wireless network. Of these 11 channels, there is only room for up to three channels that don't partially overlap one another. Partially overlapping channels causes a lot of interference. Completely sharing a channel does not due to built in software within your router. Make sure to be using one of these three channels,1,6, or 11. For more information, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

When you have done this, tick the box titled SAVE SETTINGS. Then, in the left sidebar click ADVANCED SETUP.

router security
This is the security page from your Belkin F1P1242EGau router.

You should now be on a page like the one you see here. First, in the Select Virtual AP choose the option available in this box. There should only be one choice here.

Next is the Allowed Client Type. This is the authentication used for your network security. Check out our guide for an explanation on the different security options available, WEP vs. WPA. We recommend using ****WPA2 Only.

Below that is the Authentication style. The best choice right now is Pre-shared Key.

Once you have chosen Pre-shared Key, you need to indicate the Pre-shared key type. The Passphrase (8~63 characters) is much stronger than the alternative of a hex key.

Lastly on this page is the actual Pre-shared Key. This is simply put, the password you use to access your network. This password should be at least 20 characters. The longer the password the stronger a password. When deciding on passwords to use, avoid using any personal information. Also try and avoid using any word that can be found in a dictionary. If you need to use words, make sure to misspell them. We do recommend using symbols, numbers, and capital letters within the password. For help in creating a strong yet memorable password, check out our guide titled Choosing a strong password.

That's it, you are finished. Don't forget to click the SAVE SETTINGS button at the bottom of the page before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
