Change the WiFi Settings on the Belkin F5D8236-4

This is the wifi channel page from your Belkin F5D8236-4 router.

There are two things on this page that need to be changed. The first is the Wireless Channel. This needs to be checked to be sure you are on channel 1,6, or 11. Of the 11 channels allowed in the United States, there is only room for up to three that don't overlap each other. If channels overlap they cause a lot of interference with each other. If you are completely sharing a channel, there is not nearly as much interference because of the channel sharing software within the router. So everyone should be using channel 1,6, or 11. For more information on this topic, please see our guide titled WiFi channels.

The other thing that needs to be changed from it's default setting is the SSID. This is the name you give your wireless network so you can identify it later on. Take a look at our guide titled Wireless names for more on this topic. When creating a name for your wireless network, avoid using any personal information.

When you have changed these two things, click the Apply Changes button. Then, in the left sidebar, click the link of Security.

This page has to do with the security of your router. The first drop down list is the Security Mode. As you will notice there are several different options here and they may look confusing. Take a look at our guide titled WEP vs. WPA for a description of the differences. We recommend choosing WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK). This is the best choice in this list.

Below that is the Authentication. This further narrows the Security Mode. We recommend using WPA2-PSK.

Next is the Encryption Technique. There are two choices here. TKIP and AES. We recommend the option of AES. AES is much newer than TKIP and is considered extremely secure.

The last thing you must change is the Password (PSK). This password is the one you use to access your network. It is also used in the encryption technique. You need to create a strong password that can't easily be cracked by a program or by guessing. Create a password of at least 20 characters. Avoid using personal information as this can easily be guessed. Don't use any real words that can be found in a dictionary as these can be cracked by programs very quickly. This password should look random with some symbols, numbers, and capital letters. We have created a guide that can help you come up with a strong password that is memorable, Choosing a strong password.

Click the Apply Changes button and you are done. Your wireless network should be more secure now.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
