How to Reset the Dlink DIR-655

On this page I will explain how to reset the Dlink DIR-655 router back to the original factory defaults. This is not the same thing as a reboot. When you reboot a router you cycle the power to the device. When you reset the router you take all the settings and return them back to factory defaults.

Warning: Resetting this router is a big step and should not be taken lightly. We recommend making a list of all the settings you have changed in the past. Consider the following:

  • The router's main username and password are reverted back to factory defaults.
  • The Internet name and password are also reverted back to factory defaults.
  • If you use a DSL connection you need to re-enter the ISP (Internet Service Provider) username and password. Call your ISP for the details.
  • Have you made any other changes to the router? Any changes you have made are erased and returned to factory defaults.

Take a paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. This begins the reset process. If you don't hold this reset button down for long enough you end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you wanted.

Don't forget that this erases every single setting you have ever changed on this router. This could be a lot of information loss. To avoid that we recommend trying other methods of fixing the problem you are having before you decide to reset.

Login to the Dlink DIR-655

Once you've reset the Dlink DIR-655 router you should log into it. Do this by using the default username and password. If you're not sure where to find these, don't worry. We have them listed for you in our Login Guide.

Tip: If the defaults aren't working for you it could be because the reset button wasn't held down for long enough.

Change Your Password

Now that you've reset and logged into your router we recommend setting a new password. Remember that this password only protects your router settings and not your wireless network.
