Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

This is the wifi setup page from your Netgear WGT624 router.

On this page, use the box labeled Name(SSID) to enter a name for your network. It doesn't really matter what you enter in this space but we recommend avoiding personal information. Check out our guide titled How to Change your Wireless Name for more information.

The next setting that needs to be checked is titled Channel. Everyone should be using channels 1,6, or 11. If you are interested in learning why you should only use one of these three channels, read our WiFi Channels Guide.

Now take a look at your Security Options. Due to the how fast technology has grown, we highly recommend that everyone uses WPA2-PSK[AES]. This is the newest and most secure option available right now. To learn more about this option, read our WEP vs. WPA Guide. Unfortunately this particular router version doesn't allow for this option. We recommend updating your firmware version to allow for it before continuing.

Once this is done, you need to enter a Passphrase. This is the password you use to access your network and should be as strong as possible. We recommend a minimum of 14-20 characters and at least one symbol, number, and capital letter. Learn more about this in our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

That's all that needs to be done, to save your changes, click the option of Apply near the bottom of the page.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
