Setup WiFi on the Belkin F5D7231-4

You begin on the Status page of the Belkin F5D7231-4v2 router. To configure the WiFi settings, click the link in the left sidebar under Wireless labeled Channel and SSID.

This is the wifi channel page from your Belkin F5D7231-4 router.

On this page, the first thing that you need to do is check in the Wireless Channel > drop down list to see what channel you are on. In the United States there are 11 channels you can choose from. Of these 11 channels, there is only room in the spectrum for up to three that do not overlap. You need to be on channel 1,6, or 11. Channel 6 is the most widely used, so you may want to avoid that one. Partially overlapping channels cause major interference. Completely sharing a channel does not cause interference, due to channel sharing software within the router. Beneath that is the SSID >. This is your wireless name that you create to identify your network. Enter a name here that you like but avoid using your name or anything that would point to you. Please read our guide for more information, Wireless names.

The only other thing you may want to change is the Broadcast SSID >. If you decide to uncheck this box, it hides your network name from any scanning wireless devices in the area. A hacker has the proper tools though to scan for all available networks whether they are hidden or not. This option only makes you camouflage, not invisible.

When you are done, click the blue button at the bottom of the page labeled Apply Changes. Then on the left, click Security.

The first thing on this page is the Security Mode. There are several options here, check our guide on the topic for a explanation of the differences, WEP vs. WPA. We recommend using WPA/WPA2-Personal(PSK). This is the best choice here.

Below that is the Authentication. This is further narrowing it down on what type of security you want. The best choice by far is WPA2-PSK. Refer to the WEP vs. WPA guide for more details.

The Encryption Technique is next. There are normally two choices, TKIP and AES. We recommend using AES, it is much stronger than the TKIP option. AES is considered uncrackable so far. TKIP is flawed and much more vulnerable.

The last thing on this page is the Password(PSK) >. This is the password you are going to use to access your network. Create a strong password of at least 20 characters. We recommend avoiding passwords that contain personal information. You should also avoid using any words that can be found in a dictionary. If you must use words, be sure to misspell them. When you are finished, click the blue button labeled Apply Changes. That's it, you did it!

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
