router Wi-Fi channel ssid mode
This is the wifi channel page from your Belkin F5D8233-4 router.

On this page, the first thing you need to do is look at your channel. If you are on channel 1,6, or 11 then there is no need to change. If you find your router has placed you on any of the other eight channels, you need to switch to either 1,6, or 11. Here in the United States there are 11 channels you can choose from. Of these 11 channels, there is only room in the spectrum for up to three channels that don't overlap. Overlapping channels causes a lot of interference. Completely sharing a channel does not due to channel sharing software within the router. For more information on this topic, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

The other thing on this page that should be changed from the default is the SSID. This is the name you give your network so that you can identify it later on. When creating this name, be sure to avoid using any personal information in it. Check out our guide titled Wireless names for more information.

Click the Apply Changes button. Then, in the left sidebar tick the link titled Security.

router security
This is the security page from your Belkin F5D8233-4 router.

On this page, use the box next to Security Mode to choose WPA/WPA2-Personal(PSK). This is the strongest option available with today's technology. If you want to know more about the differences in the security options, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

Next should be a choice of Encryption Technique. There are two choices in the drop down list. One is TKIP and the other is AES. TKIP is older and has some reasonably large flaws. AES is much newer and so far has not been cracked.

The last thing that is on this page is the Pre-Shared Key, or Passphrase. This is the password you will use to access your network. When creating a strong password it should be at least 20 characters long. Avoid using any personal information here. You need to also avoid using any words that can be found in a dictionary. We do recommend using some symbols, numbers, and capital letters. For more help in creating a strong and memorable password, click the link titled Choosing a strong password.

Click the Apply Changes button and you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
