You are now taken to the Wireless Settings page.

  • First, change the SSID. This is the name you give your wireless network so that you can distinguish it from the other ones around you. For security reasons do not use personal information in this name. Take a look at our Wireless Names Guide for more information on this topic.
  • Second, make sure you are on one of the correct Channels. Everyone with neighbors who may be using a wireless network should be using channel 1,6, or 11. If you want to learn more, read our WiFi Channels Guide.
  • Beneath that are four radio buttons. Choose the one on the far right titled WPA-PSK. This is by far the most secure option available for this router. For the best security, update your firmware. This would allow for WPA2-PSK. To learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of these security options, read our WEP vs. WPA Guide.
  • Now, enter an appropriate Passphrase. This is the password you are to use to gain access to your network. We recommend using at least 20 characters in this password. Don't use personal information and don't use any real words found in a dictionary. Do use some symbols, numbers, and capital letters in this password. You want to confuse the hacker. To create a seemingly random yet memorable password, read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.
  • Retype this password in the box labeled Confirmed Passphrase.
  • When you are finished with that, click the green check-mark labeled Apply.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
