You should now be on the Wireless page.

The first section is titled Identification.

  • Region - Use the drop down menu to pick the region in which you will be using this router.
  • SSID (Service Set Identifier) - This is your network name or ID and should be unique to you. It doesn't matter what you enter here but as a precaution it's a good idea to avoid personal information. Learn all about SSIDs in our Wireless Name Guide.

The second section is called Options.

  • 802.11 Mode - This is asking what type of wireless standard do you wish to use. This router if fairly old and only has the capability of dealing with wireless devices older than 2009. If you want to update your wireless standards, you will need to update your firmware.
  • Channel - If you need to change your channel do so using this drop down menu. Use channels 1,6, or 11. To learn why, check out this guide.
  • Broadcast SSID - Go ahead and leave this checked.
  • WMM support - No need to mess with this setting right now.

For the third section we have the Wireless Security.

  • Click the Configure button. This takes you to a page that unfortunately we do not have a screenshot for. If you have the choice to pick a different type of security we recommend the choice of WPA2. Check out this guide to learn more. If this option is not available we recommend updating your firmware to allow for it.
  • You should also be asked for a Passphrase. This is the internet password and should be strong. We recommend using at least 14 characters. If you need help, check out this guide.

Now skip down to the section titled Wi-Fi Protect Setup. This is WPS and is a very insecure way of connecting to a network. Do not use WPS if possible. Unckec the Enable WPS button. If you want to learn more about WPS, check out this What is WPS Guide.

That's all there is to it, just click the Save button before exiting.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
