In this guide we cover how to reset the Arris TG1682G router to factory defaults. It may need to be noted that resetting a router is different than rebooting a router. A reboot simply cycles the power to the device by turning it off and back on. Resetting a router is almost as easy but has more consequences.

Warning: Resetting a router has consequences. You need to know what changes when you reset your device. Please consider the following before continuing.

  • Your main router username and password are reset.
  • The WiFi username and password are reset as well.
  • If you use a DSL connection for your Internet, you need to re-enter the ISP, Internet Service Provider, username and password. For this information call your ISP.
  • All configurations you have ever done are erased. This could include anything from IP address changes or port forwards you configured for your favorite program.

Using something sharp such as the tip of a pencil press and hold the reset button down for about 10 seconds.

It's very important to remember this will erase every configuration you have ever made to your router.

Login to the Arris TG1682G

After the reset process is finished, you need to login using the default username and password from the factory. This is usually found in the manual or on the bottom of the router. We have included them in our Arris TG1682G Login Guide.

Change Your Password

You now should change the default password to something you create. Sometimes creating a new password is difficult. If this happens to be the case for you, check out our Choosing a Strong Password guide for helpful tips.

Tip: Write this new password down on a piece of paper and attach it to the bottom of the router for future reference.

The security of your network has also been reset to factory defaults. Certain router manufacturers like to leave the security open as the default. This literally means your network is open to any device that wants to connect, with or without your permission. We strongly recommend changing your security mode to WPA2-PSK.
